Mr Harwood, an experienced negotiator who has worked at the mediation service for 23 years, has waded into the debate over strike law by claiming that making it more difficult to withdraw their labour would only “inflame the situation” and could spur workers into unofficial action. The warning comes after business group the CBI called for the Government to overhaul legislation governing strikes ahead of an expected surge in industrial action in the public sector provoked by looming spending cuts.
Boris Johnson, writing in The Daily Telegraph on Monday, also challenged David Cameron to toughen Britain’s labour laws to stop a “nightmarish return to the politics of the 1980s” with “wave after wave of debilitating strikes”.
